Well designed streets and places provide fundamental benefits for the economic, environmental and social fabric of our society. These benefits are very significant not only in terms of road safety but also crime and disorder, the environment, social amenity and regeneration. Accordingly, the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation has formed the CIHT Urban Design Panel.

Primary objectives:

• draw together experts in the urban design field to debate and develop an active programme of projects to support the creation of quality urban spaces
• provide a focus for transfer of knowledge between CIHT and members of the other professional disciplines involved in urban design
• act as a liaison between CIHT’s Technical Boards and key external organisations such as UDAL, ASC, the CLG and DfT
• promote new ideas, best practice and better urban design of streets and places
• support research into ensuring designs are ‘fit for purpose’, durable and functional
• develop guidance notes and/or network management notes in urban design
• promote, or take part in, conferences and other forms of Continuing Professional Development
