Membership & Skills Strategy Board

The Membership & Skills Strategic Board is a new board set up as part of the new structure agreed by Council in February 2010. This Board takes on work previously undertaken by separate Education and Membership boards to oversee the development and operation of robust systems and processes to support member election and transfer and deliver professional qualifications and the CPD scheme.


The terms of reference for the Membership & Skills Strategic Board are:

  • To set and continue to review the standards and requirements for membership of CIHT
  • To set the strategy for the maintenance and development of the branch network
  • To provide a strategic overview of professional standards and qualifications
  • To consider proposals for new qualifications and training courses
  • To confirm professional review results leading to Engineering Council registration
  • To consider recommendations of the Joint Board of Moderators for approval
  • To set the strategy for the development, promotion and monitoring of the CPD scheme
  • To have a strategic oversight of the Institution’s disciplinary and professional codes of conduct activities
  • To maintain a strategic overview of government policy on post-16 education with particular regard to Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects and respond to consultations as appropriate
  • To monitor developments linked to skills continuity and enhancement and make contributions as appropriate.

The Board is supported by the following panels/committees:

  • Individual Case Procedure Panel – responsible for assessing Individual Route candidates for CEng and IEng and recommending progression to professional review.
  • Engineering Professional Standards Panel – responsible for the  professional review process and making recommendations on professional registration to the Engineering Council.
  • Transport Planning Professional Qualification Professional Standards Committee (joint with the Transport Planning Society) – responsible for the operation of the TPP qualification.
  • Membership Applications Panel – responsible for making recommendations on member election and transfer.
  • Membership Appeals Panel –responsible for considering appeals against membership decisions.
