The CIHT Institution Award is for excellence within the transportation profession, based on the following criteria:
The person should have been responsible for or have promoted a major piece of research leading to the extension of knowledge in the field of highways and transportation...
OR
The person should have made a significant contribution to policy formulation technology or management in the field of highways and transportation...
OR
The person should have played an outstanding role in the provision of infrastructure which could be either a specific project or a concept with general application.
It was first awarded in 1987. No awards were made between 2000 and 2006. Since 2006 winners have been announced at the CIHT's Awards Dinner
