The role of President is the highest honour that CIHT (Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation) members can pass on to one of their colleagues. CIHT Presidents have consistently been able to operate at the highest levels of both industry and government.
The President holds office for one year (running from June – June) and is the head of the Institution. They are responsible for leading and promoting the policies and interests of the highways and transportation profession in the public arena; these policies are agreed by members of the CIHT’s Executive Board and ratified by Council.
Chris has over 35 years experience in the construction of transport infrastructure. He is a civil engineer who, since graduating from Durham University in 1971, has pursued his career wholly in contracting, the majority of the time in highway construction. After four years with Costain as a graduate engineer, he joined AMEC (Fairclough) in 1975 and transferred to Morgan Est in 2007 following the acquisition of AMEC DPS by Morgan Sindall.
He was the contractor’s Project Manager on such high profile highway schemes as M63 Barton Bridge Widening, M63 Junctions 3 to 5 and A46 Leicester Western Bypass. His more recent roles included that of Project Manager for the AMEC-Carillion Joint Venture, constructing the Second Runway at Manchester Airport.
Chris was appointed Head of Community Relations, with the CAMBBA Joint Venture, for the privately funded M6 Toll Road which allowed him to develop his strong belief in engaging with the communities affected by modern infrastructure development and the social responsibilities of modern businesses. He now holds the post of Business Development Manager for Morgan Est.
Chris joined the North Western Branch Committee in 1995. He was Branch Chairman for the year 1999/2000. A former vice-chair of Member Services Board, he chaired the Education Board in its first two years.
Married to Janet, Chris has three adult sons, a research chemist, a pilot and a computer games software programmer. He enjoys literature, theatre and walking and lives in Cheshire.
