Young Professionals Papers Competition
2009-2010 Session Events
09 December 2009 University of Derby
David Powner, Project Manager, Derby City Council gave an excellent presentation covering the background and current progress of the £36.2M two year programme that includes construction of a new road between Bradshaw Way and Uttoxeter new road as well as a new link road in the King St area. These new roads enable bus lanes to be provided on main traffic routes and other traffic management measures to take place so that using public transport will be a more viable option for people and will assist in removing unnecessary traffic from the town centre.
David gave examples of the challenges to be faced in an urban area namely by following various Statutory Processes and also in terms of the construction itself. This gave insight into the service diversions required, the unexpected events encountered and the means by which these were dealt with. All of this gave the attendees an appreciation of the flexibility needed when dealing with roadworks in difficult locations. This covered unexpected wells, cellars, burial chambers, culverts and in certain locations very poor ground requiring geogrids.
We were advised that the scheme embraced principles of removal of clutter, maximisation of footway, use of DMRB with only minor variations, provision for storm drainage and hydrobrake solutions.
David answered the many questions posed. These covered opportunities for cyclists and others, the challenges of arranging the service diversions, the use of early contractor involvement and risk registers.
The Vote of Thanks was given by Geoff Blissett of Derbyshire County Council. An excellent meeting at an excellent venue well appreciated by over a dozen attendees from varied backgrounds.
