About Us

The CIHT North East and Cumbria Region came into being on the 28th May 2015, with the amalgamation of the North Eastern and Northern Branches. This was the culmination of an extensive Branches Review study and consultation carried out by CIHT with the aim of creating and supporting a strong regional presence across the UK. The Region covers the following local authority and metropolitan areas:
  • Northumberland
  • Tyne & Wear
  • County Durham
  • Darlington
  • Hartlepool
  • Middlesbrough
  • Stockton-on-Tees
  • Redcar & Cleveland
  • Carlisle
  • Allerdale
  • Copeland
  • South Lakeland
  • Barrow-in-Furness

An Active Region

The Region is run by an active and enthusiastic Committee, who represent the diverse membership of the Region and the industry sectors they work in. To learn more about our current Committee members, Chair and governance of the region, please go to our Who's Who page.
We are a big region geographically, and that presents both challenges and opportunities, to ensure all are getting the most out of their membership, wherever they may live or work in the area. We welcome members who want to get more involved in running the Region, whether on the Committee, or in another role, particularly those based in Cumbria and the Teesside area. Please contact us at northeastandcumbria@ciht.org.uk for further information.
We organise a year-round programme of technical seminars, workshops and social activities which cover the diversity of professional disciplines within the Region. In addition, we co-hosts the annual lunchtime series of seminars organised by the Transport Operations Research Group (TORG) at Newcastle University. We also usually organise a full-day seminar each year. Our other annual events include the Young Professionals' Competition, allowing those aged under 35 and under to present a topic to their peers, the Quiz and Golf Competition.
Go to our Events page for current details of upcoming events.
The North East & Cumbria Region Dinner is usually held in October. This now also includes our Annual Awards, which have become very popular since their launch in 2014. Our Young Professionals Group continues to grow and support those in the earlier stages of their career, with a lively mix of workshops and social activities.
Go to our Dinner and Awards page for full details of how to enter, submission guidelines, sponsor information and the latest on the Dinner itself.
The Region seeks to join forces with other professional institutions wherever possible, whether as a co-host of a technical seminar, or partner in a larger event. We are a participant in the Construction Industry Council (CIC), which lends a larger voice to promoting the skills, recruitment and best practice that are vital to keeping the industry vibrant in the area. It also provides opportunities to cross-promote engaging activities that provide Continuing Professional Development (CPD) time for our members. For further details of CIC in the north east, please visit their website.

Your will find links to download presentations and supporting materials from our technical seminars and workshops on this page, along with other useful resources.

The Region was formed out of the North Eastern and Northern CIHT Branches, both of which had a rich history of their own going back many years. You can read about this in our History area, which retains some content from the previous Branch webpages.
