The South Eastern branch of CIHT held its annual seminar on the subject of carbon reduction and measuring carbon footprint in May 2010. The event was well attended and lively question and answer sessions showed that the branch chose a subject of great interest. Delegates attended because they, like many, are considering the carbon consumed and emitted from their own travel, or via the transport operations they manage.
Speakers at the 2010 South Eastern branch seminar described the challenges and possible solutions to carbon reduction and measuring carbon footprints, including the Sustainable Development Commission’s policy advisor Duncan Kay described the outlook: A 7% reduction in carbon emissions is needed per year if the UK is to meet its targets by 2020, which it will not do at present rates.
Presentations were also given by Energy Saving Trust fleet consultant David Nicholas on opportunities available for companies seeking assistance with reduction of their fleet emissions; Halcrow principal consultant – and advisor to Transport Scotland and the Highways Agency – Chris Sowerby gave good advice on ‘carbon management’; and the material specialists Aggregate Industries’ Bob Allen and Colas’ John Richardson demonstrated that innovative materials are available for significantly reducing carbon emissions from road maintenance.
