Gosport Bike Ride

26 July 2011

On the evening of Tuesday 26th July members of the CIHT Southern Branch and Portsmouth Cycle Forum met at Gosport Ferry to embark on a leisurely cycle ride. The weather was good to us and we got to take in the sights, travelling along the old railway line, past Stokes Bay on the newly opened National Cycle Route 2 and onto Hardway before returning across the Millenium Bridge through Royal Clarence Yard.

A highlight of the trip was seeing the BMX track at Grange Road and the future Olympic stars. If you haven't seen it, it is well worth a visit.

A fish and chip supper and a trip to the pub rounded off an enjoyable evening and all agreed we must plan another cycle ride soon.

CIHT Southern Branch Annual Seminar:
‘Manual for Streets 2’

The Southern Branch held its annual seminar on Tuesday 21 June 2011 at the Discovery Centre, Winchester.  The subject of the day was the recent publication ‘Manual for Streets 2’.

The event was marketed very successfully and we were able to secure prominent and high profile speakers on a very popular subject.  These were:

  • Phil Jones – PTA
  • Steve Proctor – TMS
  • Graeme Swinburne – Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea
  • Adam Oredecki – Amey
  • Stephen Jenkins – Hampshire County Council
  • Bob White – Kent County Council

Photographs of the speakers and audience can be viewed by clicking on this link:

The seminar was given added credibility by the presence of the President of the CIHT, David Gillham who chaired the morning session as well senior local government officers, Graeme Swinburne of the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea and Keith Willcox of Hampshire County Council.  The “key note” speech was given by Cllr. Mel Kendal – Executive Member for Transport and the Environment at Hampshire County Council. Presentations from the event are available below.

Presentations:

  1. Exhibition Road, Challenging convention - Graeme Swinburne
  2. Hampshire's Companion Document to the Manual for Streets and the role of Development Control in MfS2 - Steve Jenkins
  3. Manual for Streets 2 and Development Management - Bob White
  4. Manual for Streets 2, Wider Application of the Principles - Phil Jones
  5. Manual for Streets, Planning Design and Implementation - Adam Oredecki
  6. Research on Visibility - Steve Proctor

The event was attended by 88 professionals representing over 25 organisations across England.  The feedback we have received so far is that the attendees found the event interesting, thought provoking and gained better understanding of the ethos of the document.

We were delighted to receive main sponsorship from Amey and further support from Balfour Beatty and the Project Centre.

Hampshire County Council kindly hosted the event at their Discovery Centre.  This was the first time we have used the venue and it was very popular with attendees in terms of its location accessibility to public transport and the venue' layout and facilities. We are likely to be back in 2012.
