Becoming CEng/IEng

img_CEng
Becoming a Chartered (CEng) or Incorporated Engineer (IEng) guarantees global professional recognition and the opportunity to work anywhere in the world.

High status is attached to the CEng and IEng qualifications – they are a measure of your skills and professionalism in the engineering community as well as showing your dedication to personal development. Achieving this professional peer recognition may be more straightforward than you think.

"I applied to take the Chartered Professional Review using the standard route at CIHT. I felt very relaxed and was given ample time to present myself, my project and my training. Since obtaining the CEng qualification through CIHT, I have gained the recognition I deserve from my employer by being promoted..."

CIHT offers two Routes to CEng or IEng status; these are referred to as the Standard Route and the Individual Route.

Standard Route

The Standard Route is appropriate if you have an academic qualification which is accredited by the Engineering Council as satisfying the educational requirements for underpinning knowledge and understanding for the appropriate Section of Registration.

Individual Route

If you do not have exemplifying qualifications, the Institution will consider your application under the Individual Route.

If you do not have exemplifying qualifications you must clearly demonstrate you have achieved the same level of knowledge and understanding as those with the qualifications. You need to submit a career history, an education and training record and consult the Institution for advice on the most appropriate option.

These options include:

  • Writing a technical report, based upon your experience, and demonstrating your knowledge and understanding of engineering principles
  • Following an assessed work-based learning programme
  • Taking an academic programme specified by CIHT

Professional Reviews

When your educational base has been assessed and approved by CIHT, you may follow the process to Professional Review detailed in the Guidance Notes. This will involve submitting a Portfolio of Evidence and undertaking a Professional Review Interview which allows you to demonstrate that you have reached the educational and training standards set by the Engineering Council and have the relevant experience.

Only CIHT members can undertake the Professional Review via CIHT.

Revised Guidance Notes

CIHT has revised its Guidance Notes for CEng and IEng candidates. The new June 2009 edition supercedes the February 2007 guidance notes. The main changes are:

  • All candidates for CEng or IEng must now undergo initial assessment to establish which route they should take to professional review (see guidance notes section 4)
  • Changes to the further learning report option (see guidance notes appendix b)
  • Minor amendments to the CEng and IEng competencies to reflect recent changes to the UK specification for professional engineering competence (uk-spec) (see guidance notes appendix h)

Please note that submissions based on the 2007 guidance will not be accepted beyond 30 September 2009.

You are advised to contact the Education team (education@ciht.org.uk) to discuss your application prior to submission.  From 1 October 2009, all candidates will need to present details of their career history and qualifications for initial assessment. However, if you have already received confirmation from CIHT on the route that you should take, you do not need to go through the initial assessment process.
