Modern construction and engineering projects can be complex affairs.  The processes of design, construction and implementation are often constrained by tight schedules and budgets, and require a number of highly skilled specialists to deliver.  When disputes arise, it will often be necessary to call upon the services of independent experts to advise the parties and the courts.

In such cases an expert will frequently be called upon to give advice, prepare written reports, and face cross-examination at a hearing.

In this talk, Peter Caillard explores the role, duties, qualifications of, and expectations upon an expert witness.  By way of examples he considers how they operate, how things can go well, and how, occasionally, they can go badly wrong.
