CIHT Young Professional Award

Winner

Senior Civil Engineer, TransportNI, Department for Infrastructure Northern Ireland

Kaine Lynch - YP AwardThis year’s winner is Kaine Lynch, who has been nominated by CIHT Northern Ireland and his employer, Transport Northern Ireland (TNI), in recognition of his contributions to both the industry and Institution.

Kaine is a highly capable, innovative and driven engineer with strong communication and interpersonal skills. In 2015 he achieved Chartered Civil Engineer status, only 48 months after graduating with a first class Master’s Degree from Queen’s University Belfast.

In just six years with TNI Kaine has led the procurement of multi-million pound construction contracts and acted as the client’s representative during the construction phase of the £130m Belfast to Larne dualling scheme. As Assistant Strategic Road Improvement Programme Manager, he currently oversees the management and delivery of a major programme of road improvement works across Northern Ireland with an annual expenditure of approximately £100m.

Kaine is also in the final stages of doctoral research into the impact of climate change on the long-term stability of TNI’s geotechnical assets. His research provides a critical link between academia and industry, and has led to the development of innovative remediation measures for higher risk assets on the Northern Ireland road network.

As a student Kaine regularly attended CIHT technical lectures and site visits. He won the regional heat of the Presentation Award in 2011 and was subsequently runner-up in the national competition.

On graduating he joined the CIHT Northern Ireland committee where he now has an extremely active role. Kaine leads the organisation of CIHT events such as evening lectures, panel debates and training seminars. He has previously held the role of Young Professionals’ Officer through which he delivered CIHT recruitment events, spoke at careers fairs and organised events specifically aimed at younger members, including go-karting and site visits. These endeavours directly resulted in Northern Ireland being awarded the national Recruitment Award at the 2015 CIHT Regional Officers’ Conference. Kaine is currently CIHT Northern Ireland’s Recruitment Officer and continues to chair the Young Professionals’ Group.

As a STEM Ambassador, Kaine is particularly passionate about encouraging young people to pursue a career in the Highways and Transportation sector. He attends careers events, judges the Northern Ireland Science Fair and participates in outreach projects in local primary and secondary schools. In addition, Kaine is fervent about mentoring engineers and encouraging them to pursue a professional qualification.

Kaine is a fantastic example for other young professionals wishing to support and promote the industry and give something back to the profession.
