The prestigious CIHT Annual Luncheon took place on Friday, 8th December 2017 at Grosvenor House Hotel.

Renowned through the industry as THE event of the year, guests were entertained by a guest speaker and also had a chance to catch up with their industry colleagues either before or after the Luncheon.

Guest Speaker, Robin Ince
Robin InceRobin Ince is best known as a comedian and populariser of scientific ideas.
He is the creator and co-host of the podcast Robin and Josie’s Book Shambles, which gains over 100,000 hits a month, as well as the weekly music podcast with Michael Legge, Vitriola, which mixes nonsense, arguments and discussions on the latest music releases.
He continues to present the Sony Gold Award winning BBC Radio 4 series The Infinite Monkey Cage with Professor Brian Cox and has toured solo shows about consciousness, Charles Darwin, and physics. He wrote the book, The Bad Book Club, and has edited and written short stories for two volumes of Dead Funny: Horror Stories by Comedians, as well as writing and presenting documentaries about the history of self-help, comedians and melancholy, Jeff Wayne’s War of the Worlds, Schrodinger’s Cat and General Relativity.
He has curated, produced and hosted numerous nights mixing science, music and comedy at the Hammersmith Apollo and across the UK. Recently, he has received Honorary Fellowship of UCL, an honorary doctorate from Royal Holloway College (University of London), and is a fellow of the British Science Association.
Numerous TV and radio appearances include Just a Minute, Mock the Week, and Never Mind the Buzzcocks. Robin has won three Chortle Awards, including the Time Out Outstanding Achievement Award and was nominated for Best Live Show at the British Comedy Awards.

David Quarmby CBE FCIHT

David Quarmby has had a long career in policy, planning, management, operations and research, mostly in transport, with nearly 40 years’ board level experience in government, public agencies and the private sector. Over the last 20 years he has had an extensive portfolio of chairman and board appointments in transport (railways, local transport), in tourism, in policy research and advocacy, and in consultancy. He has been an expert advisor to many organisations, including the Airports Commission.   

David has carried out special assignments for government and other bodies. He led the Winter Resilience Review of England’s Transport for the DfT in 2010, and was the lead author of A Major Road Network for England, sponsored by the Rees Jeffreys Road Fund, published in 2016 and now adopted as government policy.  

Prior to 1996 he was a main board director and then Joint MD of Sainsburys;  up to 1984 he was a board member and then MD Buses at London Transport, following a period as director of research and then chief planning officer. In the 1960s he was an Economic Adviser at the Ministry of Transport, after completing his PhD on modal choice and the value of time.  

David has honorary degrees from Huddersfield and Edinburgh Napier Universities.
