Region: London

Topic: Network Rail are investing £800m to improve and increase the capacity of one of Britain’s most used railways and the country’s busiest station: the South Western Railway into London Waterloo. This investment will result in the biggest package of improvements to London Waterloo since the 1930s along with improvements at other stations along the route. The Wessex Capacity Alliance, formed of Aecom, Colas Rail, Mott MacDonald, Network Rail and Skanska won the contract to deliver the infrastructure necessary. Work started in April 2016 with the re-developing of the former Waterloo International Terminal for domestic services and the full re-development project is expected to be complete by December 2018. This presentation will provide an overview of the infrastructure changes required to deliver the capacity improvement and describe the challenges the Wessex Capacity Alliance has overcome to maximise the comfort of the passengers using Vauxhall and London Waterloo stations in particular.

Speaker: Ian Palmer – Technical Principal, Mott MacDonald and Wessex Capacity Alliance CEM for the work on the former Waterloo International Terminal (WIT), as well as the Suburban 10 car and Vauxhall station elements. Ian is one of the Wessex Capacity Alliance’s engineering managers and has been fortunate to be involved in all of the £450m project schemes that will deliver additional capacity into London Waterloo whilst reducing levels of congestion.
