Midlands has major potential, says Ramboll
Confidence is high in central England following the launch of the Midlands Engine Strategy at this year’s Spring Budget, according to consultant Ramboll’s Birmingham director Neil Harvey (pictured). He adds that the strategy paves the way for the region to help power the UK economy.

“Chancellor Philip Hammond spoke of the enormous economic potential of the region and investments are already being made from the £1.62Bn Local Growth Fund money, provided to Midlands Local Enterprise Partnerships for improved infrastructure,” he says.

“So it is no surprise to us in the region that confidence is high; we have seen a record rise in both commercial and residential construction, fuelled by year on year increases in the number of companies and employees relocating to Birmingham.”

Across multiple sectors – and at levels that range from start-ups to multinational companies – Birmingham is now one of the most sought after locations for business, Neil Harvey says. “HSBC last year announced the relocation of its retail banking headquarters to Birmingham, while HMRC will have a new base in Birmingham from 2019, bringing 3000 jobs to the city.”

Ramboll’s global board has also identified its Birmingham office as a key area for growth, which is demonstrated with a move to new larger premises at Bruntwood’s recently redeveloped Cornerblock, creating new employment opportunities in the heart of Birmingham’s Colmore Business District.

“These fantastic premises fit well with Ramboll’s strong focus on sustainability and liveability, particularly as the building achieved Birmingham’s first EPC Grade A rating,” Neil Harvey adds. “These are exciting times for the region, but it is crucial that a strong focus is placed on creating liveable urban environments, addressing the wider socio-economic issues such as transport, environment and sustainability.

“If we get these aspects right, perhaps learning lessons from initiatives in other global cities such as Chicago, Singapore and Copenhagen, then Birmingham’s recent boom will be here to stay.”
