Membership FAQs

  1. How long will it take to process my application?

    Applications are normally acknowledged within 3 working days. The form is then considered by the Membership Application Panel, and you should know the outcome of your application within 3 weeks.

  2. Do I have to have a degree in a particular subject?

    No. Any degree is acceptable as long as you work in the highways and transportation industry.

  3. Where can I find a proposer and seconder?

    If you cannot find a proposer and/or seconder where you work, contact the Education & Membership department on t: +44 (0)20 7336 1571 or e:membership@ciht.org.uk or the local CIHT branch. They will be able to put you in touch with suitable contacts.

    If you are a prospective member outside the UK, CIHT has a number of overseas champions in numerous countries. Please contact e: membership@ciht.org.uk for more information about this service

  4. When are my subscription fees due?

    Subscriptions are due on 1 January each year.

    An invoice is sent to all members in November and must be paid by the end of January each year.

  5. How can I pay my subscription?
    The best way to pay subscription fees is by direct debit. Please see our Membership section to download a mandate form.
     
    If you arrange payments by UK Direct debit, this will be collected at the end of January. Members who wish to switch to this payment method need to complete a direct debit mandate form and return it to the Education & Membership department by 30 November prior to the year of implementation.

    Members who pay their subscription by cheque or credit card can make their payment online within the Manage my Subscription area of My CIHT. Please see our guide here on how to access My CIHT
  6. Will I get a receipt for my Membership Subscription?

    Receipts for membership payments are available online within the MY CIHT area on www.ciht.org.uk. Should you require a postal receipt, please contact the Membership team on e: membership@ciht.org.uk or t: +44 (0)207 336 1571

  7. When will I get my Certificate of Membership?
    Usually, this will be 6 weeks after election. Each certificate is signed by the President and the Chief Executive, and will be sent to you once your initial subscription fee has been paid.
  8. How can I update my records?

    You can contact the Education & Membership department on t: 020 7336 1571 or e: membership@ciht.org.uk .  You can also update your records online in 'My CIHT' or by visiting the Update Your Details page .

  9. I have lost my membership number. What should I do?

    This is visible online in 'My CIHT' on the home screen. Alternatively please contact the Education & Membership department on t: +44 (0)20 7336 1571 or e:membership@ciht.org.uk .

  10. I want to transfer between grades. What should I do?

    Contact the Education & Membership department on t: +44 (0)20 7336 1571 or e: membership@ciht.org.uk for a transfer for. You can also download the application form from the Membership section of the website.

  11. Can I become a Chartered or Incorporated Engineer through CIHT?

     

    Yes. CIHT offers standard and non standard routes to CEng and IEng.

  12. Can I transfer my Engineering Council registration to CIHT?

    Yes, click here to fill in a form online, or request a form from the Education & Membership Department on e:education@ciht.org.uk or

  13. I am going to retire shortly, is there a reduced fee for retired members?

    Yes, we do offer a retired rate. To transfer to a Retired Rate please complete the Retired Rate Form

    You need to have been a member for five years to be eligible for this reduced rate. Please contact the Menbership department t: +44 (0)20 7336 1571 for more information or to discuss your situation.
