Transport Planning Professional

Candidates

Entry routes

There are several routes to becoming a TPP candidate. These are:

The Senior Route: for those transport planners in a senior management position within transport planning who have very extensive experience.

Candidates must demonstrate the depth and breadth of their experience, providing evidence that they have met all of the practical technical and management competence requirements. As the application must reflect the candidate’s full range of experience, this is likely to include examples from earlier in their career as well as those arising more recently. The Senior Route assessment process does not include a professional interview.

The Standard Route: those with either:

  • An approved transport Masters degree, or
  •  a UK Honours degree (or equivalent) and who have also completed a graduate training or professional development  scheme for transport planners approved by the TPP Professional Standards Committee

are expected to have demonstrated that they have the knowledge that underpins the qualification, and are able to proceed directly to the preparation and submission of a Portfolio of Evidence and then on to their Professional Review.

The Portfolio of Technical Knowledge Route: those with a UK Honours degree (or equivalent) but who neither have an approved transport Masters nor have completed an approved structured graduate training scheme for transport planners must first submit a Portfolio of Technical Knowledge. When the TPP Professional Standards Committee is satisfied that they have the requisite technical knowledge, they are able to proceed to the preparation and submission of a Portfolio of Evidence and attendance at a Professional Review interview.

The Technical Report Route: those without a UK Honours degree (or equivalent) need to submit a Technical Report through which they demonstrate that they have achieved the learning outcomes that might be expected of a candidate entering through the routes described above. When the TPP Professional Standards Committee is satisfied that they have demonstrated that they have the technical knowledge required, they can proceed to the preparation and submission of a Portfolio of Evidence and a Professional Review interview.
