Fellowship of CIHT (FCIHT) is the highest grade of membership of the Institution.. Fellows are highly respected and experienced professionals who have reached a senior level of responsibility working in industry and/or academia.
Membership fees are adjusted depending on when you join in the year. For a full list of fees please see our fees page.
CIHT now offers three primary pathways to Fellowship:
Direct Admission: For non-members who meet the Fellowship criteria.
Transfer from Existing Membership: For current CIHT members seeking to upgrade to Fellow status.
Fellow by Invitation / Honorary Fellowship: For senior and influential people who have been recommended by the CIHT Board of Trustees / Council.
Applicants for Fellowship must meet the following requirements:
Be committed professionals working in the highways and transportation field;
Have proven ability in their particular field or specialism related to highways or transportation;
Have made a significant impact within the profession through their contribution and/or leadership; and
Have a minimum of around 10 years’ experience in the highways and transportation field.
Applicants must provide:
An up-to-date CV (The CV should be blind – i.e. does not include the applicant’s name, contact details, or photograph). As a minimum the CV will include:
A list of all academic qualifications the applicant holds.
Details of the applicant’s membership of any professional bodies.
Details of any professional qualifications the applicant currently holds.
The applicant’s employment history.
A statement of the relevant attributes, to support the application. (Minimum of 100 and maximum of 500 words per attribute.)

The professional body they belong to, and grade of membership.

Proposer and seconder statements (minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 200 words) should clearly demonstrate the impact the applicant has made and the extent of their involvement in relevant activities or projects. The body of the statements must be blind: no names, genders, or identifying details should be included. Proposers and seconders are required to consent to being contacted by CIHT regarding the application.
Your application will not be processed until all supporting evidence has been provided.
Specific job titles are no longer mandated.
The emphasis is on whether the individual meets all the four requirements (that is, experience, commitment, ability and impact), rather than on specific titles or durations in particular roles.
Assessment of whether applicants meet the requirements considers demonstrable attributes, rather than rigid qualifications or specific job titles. Depending on career path, it may not be possible, to cover all these attributes. Where possible, applicants should provide evidence of the following attributes:
