The Society of Road Safety Auditors

Welcome to the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation Society of Road Safety Auditors (SoRSA) website.  SoRSA represents an exciting initiative for the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT), in providing a home for the development of professional highways safety auditing best practice.

SoRSA has been established by the Institution as a response to a growing call from professionals operating in the field of safety auditing and safety engineering practice in the UK, for a forum to exchange best practice and, importantly, to  provide advice and ultimately routes to professional recognition for safety auditing practitioners.

SoRSA 2012 Conference

The Annual SoRSA Conference will be held on Monday 18 & Tuesday 19 June at the Birmingham Crowne Plaza Hotel. There will be a Legal Issues workshop and an Ask the Experts panel session on Monday afternoon followed by a full-day conference on the Tuesday. Read more and book here.

Certificate of Competence Update

SoRSA has submitted proposals to the Highways Agency (HA) and CIHT which would enable the Society to award Certificates of Competence via the Portfolio of Evidence Route as defined in IAN 152/11.  SoRSA is most pleased that CIHT has recently approved the proposals and await approval from the HA.

Once the process of gaining approvals is fully complete, the Society will be offering certification, subject to the satisfactory provision of information, to both its own members and any other auditor seeking a Certificate of Competence.

SoRSA Annual Membership Review Now Underway

The Annual Review for 2011 was postponed to allow SoRSA to establish whether, due to the publication of the recent IAN, there were any changes required to the form. The only change was the need for Fellows who are carrying out Road Safety Audits, to submit a Review each year. This is to ensure that they also maintain the required number of CPD days and number of audits/road safety engineering investigation/collision investigation work as required within HD 19/03.

All Review forms should be submitted within 3 months of the request issue date. Failure to do so may result in members being reduced to Affiliate until such time as they are able to demonstrate the requirements for their grade. Any member/fellow with post nominals (MSoRSA/FSoRSA) will no longer be allowed to use them until such time that they have successfully demonstrated the requirements for that grade.

Any applicant who fails to achieve the continuing requirements for membership will be given a period of 6 weeks to achieve the requirements. A member/fellow must inform the SoRSA Membership Secretary Libby Sands - email address (libby.sands@urs.com) during this period of how they are to achieve the required standard. A further 6 weeks maximum may be allowed providing the member/fellow has identified actions and that these will be completed within this timescale.

SoRSA launches new Practice Notes
Under the Technical Guidelines items SoRSA members will now find an increasing number of Practice Notes approved by the SoRSA Committee as offering practical advice to our members on matters of common interest. The first of these practice notes concerns Professional Indemnity and Public Liability Insurance as these issues affect safety auditing practice. We are keen to hear your views on how useful you find these notes and what other topics you would like to see feature in future.

SoRSA Membership open to all! Join Today!
SoRSA membership is now open directly to all those who work in road safety and road safety audit. This opening up of the membership of SoRSA is the start to fulfilling the requirements of the EU Infrastructure Directive and the establishment of a formal accreditation process for road safety auditors. Those involved in road safety work and particularly road safety audit who do not wish to have formal membership of CIHT can now join SoRSA direct by paying a one off application fee followed by an annual subscription for SoRSA membership. The MSoRSA membership appraisal process currently validates auditors with appropriate auditing experience as sufficiently qualified to meet the requirements of HD19/03 allowing them to undertake audits on the Highways Agency’s motorway and trunk road network and thereby the TERN network, the specified network in the EU Directive.
