Ken Skates MS, Wales’ new Transport Minister has today announced that their 20mph zones should be targeted at schools, hospitals and nurseries, the new transport secretary has said.

Ken Skates MS has said that there was support for the speed limit in areas where children and the elderly were "at risk".
Last year, Wales became the first nation in the UK to adopt a 20mph limit as the default speed limit on restricted roads. Enforcement of this policy came into effect in January 2024.
The 20mph default speed limit applies to 37% of the road network in Wales - although councils can apply for exemptions on stretches.
Sue Percy CBE, Chief Executive CIHT said:
“Speed is a contributor in many road casualties and CIHT believes that the right speeds should be set in the right places. In addition, by reducing speed, the associated energy used is also reduced. UK governments must demonstrate leadership in road safety by showing what “right speeds in the right places” means in practice.”
“Any measures that reduce traffic speed, such as 20mph speed limits in Wales will potentially reduce the level of casualties we see on the highway network.”
“CIHT believes that UK governments should reintroduce national and local road safety targets and ensure appropriate funding is put in place to share and implement best practice in responding to those targets.”
Road Safety is a key theme for CIHT and will be part of the Institution’s forthcoming manifesto that will be published next month.
