The Panel

The Panel consists of a chair and a maximum number of five Panel members.

The Panel have the power to admit members as Fellows of CIHT by reviewing and approving or rejecting CIHT Fellows’ applications. The Panel consider if the members have demonstrated significant and extensive experience within the field of highways and/or transportation.

The Membership Applications Panel will:

  •  Ensure that all selection processes are transparent, open, honest and fair
  •  Notify the Membership team of the list of new Fellows immediately following a decision by MAP
  •  Provide an annual report to the MMSB on the activities of the MAP
  •  Follow the MAP procedure for acceptance, noting that in the absence of a consensus, where the Panel could not come to a unanimous decision, a majority decision will be noted.

   

The role

Panel members are expected to read the applications of candidates put forward for Fellowship, which are circulated in confidence.

Each application is considered and Panel members agree a list of candidates to put forward for Fellowship.

Panel members may be asked to contribute to working with stakeholders and consider how those appointed as Fellows can contribute to the work of the CIHT.

Who we are looking for

Eligibility 

  • Must be currently contributing to the profession in a recognised area of roads/highways and/or transportation practice or recently retired.
  • Be a CIHT Fellow.

Key qualities of a Panel member

  • Wide knowledge of the roads, highways and/or transportation profession and current practice.
  • An understanding of the CIHT vision, mission, values and the strategic objectives of the organisation.
  • A general awareness of the services and activities undertaken by CIHT, including its key policy and advocacy work.
  • An ability to make an objective assessment of distinction and leadership in highways and/or transportation and support for the development of the profession among candidates put forward for consideration.

Skills and experience

  • Enthusiasm about the future of the sector and ideas around its development
  • Good, independent judgement
  • Commitment to the work of the Institution
  • Willingness to devote the necessary time and effort
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Willingness to speak their mind
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team
  • Knowledge of professional development in a particular region or national context.

Term of office and time commitment

The term of office is three years. 

Many of the post-holder’s duties will be undertaken remotely and on average the post-holder will review two to three Fellowship applications a month. This has the potential to increase in relation to specific campaigns, for example during the summer when CIHT traditionally run a free transfer period.
