Route to Net Zero

CIHT Transportation Profession Route to Net Zero

We are supporting the transportation sector play its part in making the UK a net zero greenhouse gas emissions economy by 2050.

The Committee for Climate Change’s 6th Carbon Budget published in December 2021 sets out strategic pathways for a rapid decarbonization of both how we travel and the infrastructure we travel on.

Now we need a plan for delivery. This is an enormous challenge that will define the careers of this generation of transportation professionals.

Overview

In June 2019 the British government made a legal commitment to end the UK’s contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. This means that the challenge for the transportation sector is now to try to eliminate emissions and not simply reduce them.

In Autumn 2021, in advance of the United Nations COP26 Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, CIHT will publish its Route to Net Zero setting out how we will work with our partners to support transportation professionals meet this challenge..

This work is being overseen by an expert Advisory Group, chaired by ex Vice Chair of the Committee for Climate Change, Baroness Brown of Cambridge.
