Transferring Engineering Council (UK) Registration

If you are registered at CEng, IEng or EngTech level through another professional engineering institution licensed by the Engineering Council, you can apply to transfer your registration to CIHT so that you pay your annual Engineering Council registration fee through CIHT in future.

Transfer of Registration

If you are considering resigning your membership of the professional engineering institution through which you register with the Engineering Council and would like to transfer your professional registration to CIHT, please refer to Sections A and B below. We recommend that you do not resign your membership of your current institution until you have received confirmation from CIHT that your application to transfer your registration has been successful.

If you have only recently paid the current annual registration fee through the institution through which you currently hold registration, you may wish to apply for Additional Membership (see below) until your next registration fee is due and apply to transfer your registration to CIHT at that point.

Additional Membership

If you intend to continue paying your registration fees through the current institution through which you hold registration but would like to be professionally registered through CIHT as well, you may wish to consider applying for Additional Membership. This requires you to provide evidence of equivalent competence in a highways and transportation context and demonstrate your commitment to the development and enhancement of transport and infrastructure. Please refer to the Additional Membership Application Form for further details.

a) For members registered through ICE, IStructE or IHE

The applicant must:

  • Complete theTransferring Engineering Council Registration form
  • Be a current member of CIHT at Member grade (MCIHT) or above or Associate Member grade (AMCIHT) or above for EngTech
  • Provide a detailed CV
  • Provide a CPD record which demonstrates a minimum of 25 hours for each of the previous two years prior to the date of application.

b) For members registered through another engineering institution

In addition to the requirements listed in a), you will need to:

  • Submit written evidence that demonstrates competence and commitment in a highways and transportation context derived from and meeting the generic standards specified in UK-SPEC for the relevant Section of the Register (i.e. CEng, IEng or EngTech). Please e-mail the Education Team to receive a template.

Fee

£25.00  (payable online via your MyCIHT account once an admin check has been completed).

What next?

Your application will be passed to the Chair of the Engineering Professional Standards Panel for consideration. Candidates are usually informed of their application outcome within 6 weeks.

If the transfer is approved:

  • The Engineering Council will be notified of the transfer and will update their Register accordingly.
  • You will be invoiced by CIHT for Engineering Council fees going forward.

Mutual Recognition Agreements

If you are a registered engineer with Engineering New Zealand or Engineers Ireland, you may be eligible to transfer your registration to the Engineering Council via a mutual recognition agreement. These agreements provide exemption from some components of the assessment process, where an equivalent procedure has been completed by your home institution. You must be a member of CIHT at Member grade (MCIHT) or above in order to apply.

Mutual Recognition Agreement Application Documents

Your application should consist of the following documentation:

  • A completed Mutual Recognition Agreement Application Form
  • Detailed CV
  • Copies of academic qualifications/diplomas and certified translations. If your courses are not already recognised for Engineering Council registration, CIHT may need additional information about the knowledge assessment undertaken by your home institution
  • A certified copy of your professional institution membership certificate and engineering registration certificate
  • UK-SPEC Evidence Forms (500 words for each section). Please e-mail education@ciht.org.uk
    for a template.
  • CPD Record (25 hours for each of the two previous years)

Fee

£150.00 (payable online via your MyCIHT account once an admin check has been completed)

How to Apply

To apply via a Mutual Recognition Agreements, you should submit the above documentation to education@ciht.org.uk, as one comprehensive PDF file.
