CIHT hosted the SoRSA Annual Conference which took place on 21-22 June 2021.
The conference considered vulnerable users and covered worked examples of real-life issues. It also consisted of a dedicated session on cycle safety, with some of the most prestigious speakers on the subject.
The first day covered a mock Road Safety Audit which looked at a range of problems for each Auditor to identify. We had a speaker from RNIB, one of the UK’s leading sight loss charities and the largest community of blind and partially sighted people, who explained some of the difficulties blind people face and what Auditors can consider when reviewing designs. We also saw the return of the famous ‘Is this a Problem?’ session, but took it to the next step.
Day two of the conference covered a range of cycling design and problem identification, all with a different twist. We also addressed rural cycle design and when things do not go to plan if problems are not identified within Road Safety Audits.
The content on this page is available and accessible to those individuals who registered for the conference. If you registered, but were not able to attend the conference, you will be able to access the recordings. The videos will not be visible to those who did no register for the event.

Welcome to the workshop, we hope you find this an interesting exercise even in this very different environment!
The exercise involves a fairly simple stage 1 RSA based around a made-up site designed to work within the time constraints we are bound by. There are three questions which we would like to address:
The proposals Involve the construction of a new roundabout on Hill Rd, a 40-mph speed limit single carriageway distributor road on the approach to a small town with an existing shared cycle/footway running along the north side. Turner Way will form a distributor to a mixed development of residential and light industrial units. The drawing is an excerpt from the first stage of the development.
From the Transport assessment:
Hill Rd has a 40mph speed limit. All others will be 30mph.
Hill Rd and the development will all be street lit to current standards.
The area is generally flat and amenable to standard drainage design.
