Baroness Brown is an engineer and a Crossbench Member of the House of Lords, who has held senior roles in industry and academia. In eight years at Rolls-Royce her positions included Director of Advanced Engineering for the Industrial Businesses and Director of Engineering and Technology for the Marine Business. She was an academic at Cambridge for sixteen years, and Vice-Chancellor of Aston University from 2006 – 20016.
She is currently: Vice-Chair of the Committee on Climate Change and Chair of the Adaptation Committee; NED of the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult; Chair of the Carbon Trust. She was a non-executive director of the Green Investment Bank and led the King Review on decarbonising transport (2008) for the Chancellor of the Exchequer. She is the Sector Champion for the Offshore Wind Sector Deal.
Building on a PhD from Queen’s University, Belfast for research into low emission engines, Dr Gillespie has over 30 years international experience in the automotive industry. He joined MIRA in 2009 as CEO and in 2015 he led the sale of MIRA to HORIBA Japan. He is now President of HORIBA’s automotive division and a Senior Corporate Officer of HORIBA Ltd, Japan. He is currently President of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) and previously chaired the Intelligent Connected Vehicles Group within the UK Automotive Council from 2014 to 2018 and is a member of the WEF Global Autonomous Urban Mobility Council. He has previously served as a Board Member of both the Coventry & Warwickshire LEP and the Leicestershire LEPs.

Ivan leads a team providing advice to the company on the environment and sustainable development His work, and that of his team includes the development of technical standards and the production of strategies and plans to enable Highways England to deliver even better performance in protecting and enhancing the natural and built environment and reducing emissions of pollution, including greenhouse gases.
Ivan is currently focused on the production of a robust and stretching Carbon Reduction Plan, to ensure the company fully contributes to the UK achieving net-zero Carbon by 2050.
For the panel session, Baroness Brown, George Gillespie and a speaker from Highways England will be joined by three additional panellists. The session will be an opportunity for delegates to put questions to the panellist on the challenges that the sector faces to reduce carbon emissions.
