In 2012 the A1d2b Team won the John Smeaton Trophy (Best Highways & Transportation Scheme in the Region) for their submission on the A1 Dishforth to Leeming Improvement – as an excellent example of how to upgrade a dual 2 lane road to dual 3 lane motorway using innovative methods and best practice with great consideration for wildlife, scheduled ancient monuments, and creation of new habitats.

The Scheme includes 38km of upgraded trunk road. The A1 is a key route and carries 45-54,000 vehicles per day with 25% hgvs. The improvement began in March 2009 and opened in spring 2012. Works include:- 177km of drainage and 14 attenuation ponds; 2.5 million m 3 of cut/fill earthworks; 2.5m tonnes of imported granular material; 11 new bridges, 5 refurbished bridges and 6 demolished; 980,000 tonnes of sub-base and blacktop; 140,000 trees /shrubs; 250,000 hedgerow plants and 55,000 aquatic plants and 1million m2 of hydro-seeding. Innovative project delivery was sought though challenging existing processes and the use of best practice and technology.

Working with supply chain partners enabled challenges to existing ways of working and to introduce sustainable improvements that ensured, reduce costs and minimised impact on the environment. 38 local community projects and donations have benefitted from the scheme.
