Introduction
The A421 Improvements M1 Junction 13 to Bedford has won the Major Civil Engineering Project Award for projects over £50m at the 2011 British Construction Industry Awards.
URS Scott Wilson was Principal Designer for the scheme, working with Balfour Beatty under an Early Contractor Involvement contract awarded to the team by the Highways Agency in 2005. The project comprises 13.5km of new dual carriageway, diverting traffic from the former single-lane carriageway and increasing road capacity. The project team used 350,000 old car tyres to create an embankment along the realigned route, the first time multiple layers of tyre bales have been used in this way on a public road in the UK. The scheme opened one month ahead of programme in December 2010.
This is a free event with CPD certificate available.
