A64 Bishopthorpe South Bridge

This project won the CIHT Yorkshire & Humberside Best Scheme Award in 2013.

The A64 Bishopthorpe South Bridge forms part of the strategic road network and, as such, carries large volumes of traffic. Replacement of its worn out bridge bearing meant that traditional construction methods would have resulted in excessive and unacceptable delays to the travelling public therefore ingenuity and innovation was required. The solution was to use the ‘Maurer Modular Bridging System’ which allowed temporary protection to the bridge joint during the day, allowing 2 lanes of traffic to flow in each direction. The ramps could then be raised, under a full carriageway closure allowing night-time working to access the joint. In addition the ramps in their raised position acted as a temporary noise barrier during the night time construction works providing environmental benefit to the nearby residents.

Speakers

Simon Taylor is a Project Manager with A-One+ and was the Design Lead for this project. Simon has fourteen years’ experience working in the transportation field, working on a wide mix of transport orientated projects, including a new canal link, heavy and light rail schemes, and highway projects (both maintenance and improvement schemes).

Holly Harrison has seven years’ experience working in the transportation field, working on a variety of highway maintenance and improvement schemes. Within the last six months Holly has transferred from A-one+ to CH2M Hill Cardiff as a Highway Engineering Technician, working on carriageway widening and traffic signal improvement schemes.
