USING MEASURES OF BEHAVIOURS TO EVALUATE ROUTE SAFETY INTERVENTIONS - Research Report and Guidance for Practitioners
During the past ten years route safety intervention has emerged as one of the key developments in delivering road casualty reduction. However, there has been wide variation in development, experience and evaluation of route safety management schemes.
Previous research by TRL for ADEPT (previously CSS) identified some good practice but showed that evaluation of impact has typically been limited to data on accidents and traffic speeds, with little or no assessment of how drivers respond to route safety interventions.
The latest research for ADEPT was commissioned in 2010 to identify reliable and consistent measurement of behaviours that will improve practitioners’ understanding of how drivers and riders respond to the road environment.
This new guidance is aimed at using research knowledge of measuring behaviour to provide practical ways of assessing the degree of success of route safety intervention measures, which may include combinations of engineering, education and enforcement.
The broader set of evaluation methods will help to build the evidence base for future route safety intervention, enable better comparison of outcomes and support the development of best practice.
Delegates had the opportunity to share in the latest research development and consider how to achieve improved casualty reduction through route safety management.
Group sessions on the practical application of the new guidance also took place.
