CIHT East Midlands invites you to a presentation and Q&A from the chair for the region, Dr Jwan Kamla, as she shares new findings from her research. Jwan will explore how male and female drivers experience different injury severity outcomes on high-speed roadways, drawing on 2023 UK STATS19 data and advanced mixed logit modelling with heterogeneity in means and variances to uncover gender specific risk factors.
This webinar address key questions such as: Which crash conditions disproportionately affect male versus female drivers? How do temporal patterns, vehicle type, weather, roadway design, and driver characteristics shape injury severity? And why does unobserved heterogeneity matter when analysing crash data? The session will also highlight systemic issues, including gender bias in traditional safety standards, behavioural differences in risk perception, and the influence of rural road design, vehicle age, and environmental conditions on crash outcomes. Dr Jwan Kamla, Road Safety Manager, Gloucestershire County Council, and Chair, CIHT East Midlands. Jwan is a Chartered Engineer and road safety leader with over 22 years of experience delivering complex, high profile transport, safety and highways programmes. She is the Road Safety Manager and Road Safety Programme Manager at Gloucestershire County Council, where she leads the countywide strategy for road safety, traffic and highway engineering, active travel, and collision reduction. Her role includes overseeing multidisciplinary teams, managing budgets, and acting as the client and approving authority for key schemes, ensuring robust governance and evidence based decision making. Her experience includes consultancy roles focused on delivering major projects and safety governance, including road safety auditing, walking, Cycling and Horse Riding Assessments, safety risk assessments, safety reports and plans, deep research work, data analysis, modelling, collision investigation, and transport planning. This complements her public sector leadership. Jwan sits on multiple strategic boards and panels including departures panels, partnership panels, and active travel governance groups where she influences policy, design standards, and cross sector collaboration. She holds a PhD in connected vehicle data and collision prediction and is recognised for her expertise in statistical modelling, behavioural insights, and translating research into practical safety solutions. She currently serves as Chair of CIHT East Midlands and contributes regularly to national conferences, professional reviews, and academic teaching. |
