Lawrence Penn - Future Mobility Consultant at WSP
Lawrence joined the WSP graduate scheme in October 2019 as a Transport Modeller having completed his masters in Transport Planning at the University of Leeds. During his studies, he became interested in the future of transport and subsequently developed an interest in self-driving cars. The led him to write his masters dissertation on the topic, in which he developed a framework for a methodology to assess the suitability of a given road for safe navigation by a Connected and Automated Vehicle (CAV).
Lawrence managed to secure some funding through the Future Transport Visions Group and managed to get £5k to develop his dissertation idea further into the CAV Road Scoring Index. The funding mostly went towards data, and 33k words later Lawrence had produced a research report and preliminary analysis of the road network in western Leeds, along with several CAV corridors where self-driving cars could (in theory) be prioritised for early deployment with minimal risk.
The project now forms part of his day-to-day work having secured further funding from WSP to develop a minimum viable product, and it was one of six projects selected by the Department for International Trade to be showcased at the world’s biggest tech conference (CES 2022) in Las Vegas in January.
