Banter: Love it or Loathe it?
As a result of feedback from Women in Transport members we are examining some of the everyday micro behaviours that can cause awkwardness and barriers at work. The facilitators will use the lens of humour to explore micro-inequities that can prevent women moving up in their careers. Included is some recent research on the subtle ways men and women use banter differently to assert their place in groups and teams and the different impact humour has.
 
This workshop is aimed at anyone who works or operates in majority / minority contexts. It will also be of interest for those managing a team or group where there is an unequal balance.
 
Objectives include:
  • Understanding the function banter plays as ‘social glue’ and how men and women use & respond differently to jokes & banter
  • Distinguishing unhelpful banter in context and knowing when to intervene or not
  • Addressing negative banter with useful tips for women and men to consider as they support colleagues

Julie Kaya, Inclusion & Organisation Development Consultant
Julie has worked in Diversity and Inclusion for 20 years. She has spent 10 of those working in construction, rail and financial and professional services businesses to sustainably improve and maintain effective practice and support competitive advantage. Clients include key labour suppliers, HS2, BAM Construct, Rider Levett Bucknall & Lend Lease.
 
Kevin Bowsher, Equality & Diversity manager at Network Rail.
After 30 years at the forefront of Diversity and Inclusion in Policing and more recently the Olympic & Paralympic Games, Kevin is now helping to deliver Network Rail's “Everyone Strategy” which ranges from creating an inclusive internal culture to engaging with suppliers and contractors helping achieve strong community engagement and effective policy development.
