The Airport has grown by around 40% over the last 5 years to around 13 million passengers per year. This growth has strained the capacity of the airports facilities and led to inconsistent levels of customer service. The main focus of the master plan is on the 15 years to 2033 when the airport expects to be handling around 18 million passengers. To meet this rising demand, they plan to invest around 500 million to expand and improve the Airport, to transform the experience for passengers and to improve the efficiency for Airlines and partners.

Robert has been at Birmingham Airport for five years and his current role involves overseeing all planning and surface access matters and ensuring that the positive economic impact of airports is maximised in local, regional and national strategies . Current issues include ensuring that the benefits of HS2 in respect of the airport and regional global connectivity are fully realised when it opens in 2026, producing a master plan for the next 15 years to guide future development and increasing the sustainable modal share of passengers and staff accessing the airport.
