We will hear from two engineers, Meshi Taka and Mumo Musyimi, working in the highways sector who shall share their personal experiences.
This interactive event shall explore concepts such as inclusivity, conscious and unconscious bias and bringing one’s authentic and best self at places of work, particularly engineering consultancies and contracting firms.
Two engineers working in the highways sector shall share their personal experiences. They will speak about their differing experiences with regards to growing up, finding employment and progressing professionally.
The speakers shall share their perceptions of the role which their ethnicity (i.e. being Black) has played in shaping their experiences.
This event is aimed at engineering and non-engineering professionals (such as HR) at all levels within consulting and contracting firms that work in highways and transportation schemes.
Meshi Taka, Technical Manager at Fairhurst
Meshi is a Chartered Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers (CEng MICE) and Technical Manager.
With over 15 years’ experience, she has delivered a variety of infrastructure and non-infrastructure projects in the utilities, water and construction sectors. She is at her best when getting people excited about engineering solutions to real world problems.
In 2018 she was a Best Woman Civil Engineer finalist at the 2018 European Women In Construction and Engineering (WICE) awards and named as one of Inclusive Boards and Financial Times Top 100 Most Influential Women In Engineering in 2019.
Meshi is the Fairness, Inclusion and Respect Lead for ICE north east’s regional committee and the member of the national ICE FIR committee. She is a vocal advocate for diversity and inclusivity in the workplace.
Mumo Musyimi, Water Services and Infrastructure Engineer at Fairhurst
Mumo Musyimi is an early–career Water Services and Infrastructure Engineer currently employed at Fairhurst. During his time at the university, Mumo was appointed as the Course Representative for BEng/Meng Civil Engineering.
In recognition of his curricular and extra-curricular achievements, he was awarded the Newcastle University Vice Chancellor’s Scholarship for Excellence.
Mumo is fond of public speaking and keen on making valuable contributions towards social causes.
