In recognition of Black History Month, the CIHT West Midlands region is holding an event to celebrate diverse ethnicities in transport, where we will hear from three speakers:
Kulvinder Rayat - Associate Director (Major Projects Director) at Arup
Farheen Ahmed - Associate Technical Director (Highways) at Arcadis
Jimoh Ibrahim - Road Safety Audit Portfolio Manager at Royal Haskoning DHV
They will share their experiences as professionals in the industry, the struggles they have encountered and also examples of excellence while at work.

Kulvinder Rayat, Associate Director (Major Projects Director) at Arup
Kulvinder Rayat joined Arup in 1997. He is an Associate Director within the Bridges and Civil Structures team based at the Arup Midlands Campus, UK. He holds a BSc (Hons) in Civil Engineering and is a Chartered Civil Engineer with 34 years’ experience. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers.
Kulvinder has had extensive involvement in the design, site supervision and contract administration of Major Infrastructure works. He has proven expertise in successfully identifying, negotiating, managing and delivering complex, multi-disciplinary and politically sensitive projects.
He has holistic experience from concept, feasibility stage, detailed design and construction. He has project managed significant infrastructure projects in the UK that include the reconfiguration of highway and railway interfaces, long viaducts overs rivers in floodplains and over canals. He is a competent technical advisor, with extensive understanding of EU standards and continues to advise a consortium of European Banks (as Lenders Technical Advisor) currently investing in the major maintenance and upgrading of motorways in Central Europe.
Kulvinder is actively pursuing Arup’s interest in developing major infrastructure projects in Developing Countries.
Farheen Ahmed, Associate Technical Director (Highways) at Arcadis
Farheen is a chartered engineer with over 18 years’ experience leading large multi-disciplinary design teams in the delivery of major highways projects on the Highways England and Local Authority Network.
Farheen is skilled professional and one of her key skill is delivering technically complex projects in close collaboration with contractors and the Key Supply chain to ensure that designs are developed accurately, efficiently and delivered on time.
She is fully conversant with all relevant design standards. Prior to her current role, Farheen has led and developed teams in the highways scheme design and project management disciplines for various other consultants. Farheen has been responsible for managing and directing the delivery of an extensive programme of scheme designs and professional service activities throughout the process from identification, Value Management to the construction phase. This involves her undertaking careful and collaborative planning and programming with clients, stakeholders and contractors to ensure designs are delivered to budget and to programmes that make efficient and effective use of network access (including minimising scheme congestion and JTR impacts), resource availability and funding.
Jimoh Ibrahim, Road Safety Audit Portfolio Manager at Royal Haskoning DHV
Jimoh is a Senior Transport Planner with Royal HaskoningDHV based in Birmingham. With over five years of experience, Jimoh’s portfolio of work has included providing technical support and innovative solutions on transport matters for National Significant Infrastructure Projects as well as smaller residential, commercial and industrial developments both domestically and internationally.
Jimoh is also the Road Safety Audit Portfolio Manager for Royal HaskoningDHV in the UK. He has carried out collision investigation and analysis, in terms of general highway safety in particular looking for inherent safety issues in the vicinity of proposed development. Many of these have related specifically to Heavy Goods Vehicles and the severity of collision associated with them.
Jimoh has also undertaken Road Safety Audits, taking part in several Stage 1, 2 and 3 audits to date, after qualifying as a road safety auditor.
