Topic:Reducing fuel poverty and carbon emissions are key goals for Islington Council, whilst cooling the London Underground is a major challenge for TfL. The two organisations are now working in partnership to deliver one of the UK’s most innovative infrastructure projects, the Bunhill 2 energy centre. The new energy centre will convert warm air from a London Underground ventilation shaft into hot water for distribution through Islington’s Bunhill Heat Network, which is being expanded by another 500 homes. During the summer months the energy centre will also provide cooled air into the London Underground tunnels, while at the same time still producing the hot water needed for the network. Several other cities are now looking at replicating this ambitious scheme, including Bucharest and Seoul. Come and hear how Islington and TfL worked together to deliver a project that will provide benefits to both partners, as well as local residents and commuters.
