Canals Changing Contribution to Transport

Canals ‘Changing Contribution to Transport’

Waterways have been used for transport purposes from the earliest times. Before the development of road and railways systems, it was much easier to move goods by water than on land. The Industrial Revolution was facilitated by the development of a network of canals. Canal traffic declined with the coming of the railways but there was a revival from the mid-20th Century for leisure boating, and canals are now integral to the cycling and walking network in the UK.

Speakers:
  • David Brown Principal Engineer, Canal & River Trust
  • Graham Lennard Principal Active Travel Officer, Birmingham City Council.
David Brown will discuss how canals have evolved over the centuries and Graham Lennard will talk about the use of canals by cyclists and pedestrians and present some examples of good practice and lessons learnt.

This is a free event open to all (members and non-members).
