In recent years, additional generic types of asphalt
surfacing materials have become available for use on road
and airfield pavements. Some clients have used them to
replace the more traditional materials everywhere, whilst
others have generally remained loyal to the original types.
The best approach must be to take all the available types
into consideration so that the most appropriate option
can be selected for each individual case.
The seminar will review the advantages and disadvantages of the various types of
hot mix asphalt that are available. The relative importance of different properties
will change with the conditions that prevail on each site, making it difficult for
one material to be appropriate in every case. The talks will concentrate on the
most commonly-used types of thin surfacing (including stone mastic asphalt), hot
rolled asphalt and coated macadam (now termed asphalt concrete), but will also
cover less frequently used materials such as mastic asphalt and porous asphalt.
It is hoped that the seminar will stimulate engineers to consider the mixtures that
they specify or propose for use on a site, so that its properties meet the various
specific requirements. One size does not fit all.
