Speaker: Ken Spence, Transport Initiatives LLP

Ken Spence has been at the centre of the development and introduction of Bikeability, the National Standard for cycle training in the UK. He is currently acting as an adviser and assessor in the implementation and quality control of the National Standard.  Ken has developed the Cycle Skills Network Audit (CSNA) process. Exclusive to Transport Initiatives, CSNA rates the network available to cyclists in an audit area by Bikeability skill level required to cycle on it in comparative safety. Ken has now undertaken many CSNAs for a wide range of customers. Prior to forming Transport Initiatives Ken was the Specialist Adviser for Road Safety and Cyclist Training for the ERCDT 2002-2005. For 11 years before that he was Road Safety Officer for the City of York Council during which time he set up the York Road Safety Training Team on which much of the practice for the National Standard for Cycle Training has been based.

Presentation Summary:
Contrary to public perception most of our roads are already safe to cycle on, even for less experienced cyclists. Ken and Transport Initiatives know because they have devised a method to assess them that they have used to audit hundreds of miles of roads throughout England. The Cycle Skills Network Audit (CSNA) shows us what it’s really like out there, where the barriers are and where we should focus our resources to maximise the benefit to increase cycling. What is more, with little additional effort the CSNA can be used to show both cycling and pedestrian accessibility to any site in an audit area. This makes it ideal to assist in planning of safe routes to school and even school transport assessments.

Registration took place from 6:00pm – 6:30pm, with tea & coffee. The lecture started  at 6:30pm in the Crompton Suite. Following the lecture, drinks and nibbles were served, providing attendees the opportunity to network with their colleagues.  The evening finished at approximately 8:30pm.
