GoToWebinar: This webinar, organised by CIHT Cymru Wales, will provide an overview of the M4 Ebbw Bridge.
The webinar will include a main presentation and Q&A session.
The M4 Ebbw Bridge was constructed in 1967 with reinforced concrete thrust-hinges supporting the main deck slab. A targeted campaign of intrusive and semi-intrusive investigations confirmed the widespread presence of corrosion to the reinforcement of the deck hinges.
Welsh Government acknowledged the possibility that assessments may conclude that the hinges in their deteriorated condition may have limited residual fatigue life or exhibit unacceptably high levels of static-strength utilisation and instructed assessments to be undertaken in accordance with DMRB CS 467.
Preliminary findings from the assessments identified significant risk therefore WSP and Alun Griffiths Contractors were commissioned in February 2021 to undertake urgent strengthening works to support the suspended slab with minimum disruption to the road users.
The presentation highlights the interim measures undertaken to monitor the structure during the detail design and through construction and the collaborative approach required to deliver within significant environmental and engineering constraints.
