Kimberley Butcher, Graduate Civil Design Engineer, Galliford Try Presentation title: Nevertheless She Persisted: Exploring the Retention of Women in UK Civil Engineering Women remain significantly underrepresented within the UK civil engineering workforce, and while recruitment has improved in recent years, retention continues to present a challenge for the industry. This presentation shares the findings of an award-winning undergraduate dissertation exploring the factors that influence women's decisions to remain in, or leave, civil engineering careers. Drawing on interviews with female engineers across the sector, the research examines themes including workplace culture, gender bias, leadership representation, work-life balance, career progression and confidence. Alongside highlighting the barriers experienced by many women, the presentation also explores examples of positive change and practical actions organisations can take to create more inclusive and supportive workplaces. The session combines research findings with personal reflections from a recent civil engineering graduate entering the profession, offering insights relevant to students, graduates and industry professionals alike. |
