The East Midlands Gateway project is a Strategic Rail Freight Interchange to serve the East Midlands. It is located adjacent to Junction 24 of the M1. Construction started in January 2017 and it will take around 3 years to complete the main infrastructure which includes access from the A453, earthworks, environmental mitigation, the rail connection, major improvements to Junctions 24 and 24A of the M1 and a southern bypass for Kegworth.
The presentation will cover the background to the scheme, the benefits it will bring, how significant challenges were overcome, the planning process (under the Planning Act regime for Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects) and a look ahead to the construction period.
