This webinar, which is part of the CIHT North West Career Talks event series, will hear from Beckie Claytor, Operations and Safety Associate within ITS at WSP, and Nicola Kane, Head of Strategic Planning, Insight & Innovation at Transport for Greater Manchester. They will talk about their careers, the sector and advice they have learned over the years.
Our career talks event series will see multiple professionals from both Transport Planning and Engineers disciplines talking about their career, the sector, how the sector works with other disciplines, hints, tips and advice they have learned over the years and what the future of the sector looks like.
Each event will include two speakers, followed by a question and answer session.
In this afternoon session we will hear from Nicola Kane, Head of Strategic Planning, Insight & Innovation at Transport for Greater Manchester and Beckie Claytor, Operations and Safety Associate within ITS at WSP who will talk about her chosen career path, how she got there (qualifications, job opportunities, organisations, what she does now (area of expertise) Technical and Operational roles, some of her greatest achievements (Women in ITS, Road Academy Emerging Leaders, Awards, projects etc) and ITS as a sector (the future of ITS, future roles and projects).
This webinar series is open to everyone and could be of particular interest to those who are either starting out in the sector, those looking to change sector or people who are just interested in the sector and how to progress within it.
Beckie Claytor, Operations and Safety Associate within ITS at WSP
Beckie is an Operations and Safety Associate and Regional Lead within Intelligent Transport Systems at WSP. With 13 years’ experience in the transport sector Beckie joined WSP in 2018 after working in Highways England for 10 years, most recently for the Incident Management Requirements Team within Safety, Engineering and Standards, and started out on front-line operations as a Team and Incident Manager in the West Midlands regional control centre.
Beckie has provided technical consultancy support to the delivery of significant changes within Highways England, most notably the safety requirements, organisational design and training for the Technology Operations Capability, implementing the operational technology strategy into Highways England IT Directorate.
As well as being a Wellbeing Champion and Mental Health First Aider, Beckie is also the Vice Chair of the ITS UK - Women in ITS forum, facilitating the professional development of women in ITS and promoting ITS as a career choice.
Nicola Kane, Head of Strategic Planning, Insight & Innovation at Transport for Greater Manchester
Nicola is a chartered town planner (MRTPI) and qualified transport planning professional (TPP) and joined TfGM in 2014 after 15 years of working in consultancy. She has wide-ranging experience in transport strategy and policy development, development planning and travel behaviour change.
She’s now enjoying the opportunity to help shape the future of transport in Greater Manchester and is leading a range of work, including a new 5-year transport Delivery Plan (in support of the Greater Manchester Transport Strategy 2040 and Greater Manchester Spatial Framework), the development of a vision-led approach to strategic planning (supported by “Right Mix” mode share ambitions), and Greater Manchester’s “Future Mobility” aspirations. Nicola was awarded “Transport Planner of the Year” by Transport Planning Society in 2017 for her work in leading Greater Manchester’s 2040 Transport Strategy and the 2040 Strategy also won the EU’s “7th Sustainability Urban Mobility Plan award on multi-modality” in 2019.
