John Collins will present on the works from 2020 to date on the Humber Bridge rocker bearing replacement. Following the passage of Storm Ciara in February 2020, damage to the A-frame rocker bearings connecting the Barton side span deck box to the tower was observed. An emergency lane closure and repair was installed, just ahead of the first covid-19 lockdown. Following further investigation including a load trial in summer 2020, replacement was recommended. An alternative, temporary bearing design was developed by John and Mark Bulmer from AECOM. This created a new load path allowing for future permanent replacement of the bearings. The temporary arrangement was installed by the Humber Bridge Board and their subcontractors in 2021. These were highly specialised works requiring a detailed understanding of the bridge and its articulation behaviour. John will explain this background and the pragmatic, collaborative approach taken to maintain traffic flows on this major transport link.
