City Flyers: Urban Cable Cars and The Emirates Air Line

A Greater London Branch Event

Evening Presentation, 6.00 for 6.30 PM

Venue: Palestra 197 Blackfriars Road, London SE1 8NJ (Paddington Room)

Nearest Tube: Southwark

Presenters: Tony Wilson (TfL) Steven Wilson (Mott MacDonald)

Chair: Paul Clifford

There are thousands of tourist and ski cable car systems in operation around the world, but applying ropeway technology to urban transport is comparatively rare. However, recent developments, including the Emirates Air Line (London Cable Car) currently under construction over the Thames, are highlighting the many benefits of this proven people mover technology. The first part of the talk will explore the advantages of ropeway systems over other forms of transport, describe when a cable car is the best option, the system types available and in what circumstances they should be used and discuss key steps to delivery. Although other examples from around the world will be highlighted, the second part of the talk will present details on the planning, design and delivery of the Emirates Air Line scheme.

Tony Wilson is a Planning Manager within Transport for London Planning. He is responsible for various programmes and projects across London including reviewing river crossings in east London; it was from the river crossings workstream that the Air Line concept emerged. He previously worked on the Cross River Tram proposal for a new light rail line across central London, and before that spent several years working for transport consultancy Colin Buchanan.

Steven Wilson is a Senior Project Manager with Mott MacDonald's Integrated Transport team. With a background in urban design, architecture and planning, he provides management and technical leadership for urban design, master planning, regeneration and planning projects, often involving transport infrastructure. Steven led Mott MacDonald's team in assisting TfL through the feasibility, design, planning and procurement phases of the Emirates Air Line (London Cable Car).
