CIHT West Midlands is delighted to host this webinar with Dr Alalea Kia from Imperial College London to introduce Kiacrete, the first high-strength clogging resistant permeable pavement. This climate change resilient permeable infrastructure material contributes to a sustainable built environment.
Flooding currently costs the UK £2.2bn annually and is projected to rise to £27bn by 2080 without significant flood resilient infrastructure investment. Permeable concrete pavements are one of the most promising flood mitigation strategies. However, they suffer from low permeability, high clogging potential, low strength and durability. This talk will introduce the first high-strength clogging resistant permeable pavement (Kiacrete) and highlight its superior laboratory performance. It will also cover the first large-scale deployment of Kiacrete, which has taken place in August 2020 at Imperial’s new White City Campus, and its durability and drainage performance along with its contributions towards net-zero carbon.
Transport infrastructure operators, engineering consultancies, contractors, suppliers, policy and research. Anyone interested in resilient sustainable infrastructure, addressing climate change and urbanisation related extreme weather events such as flooding, heat waves and ice/snow, as well as creating a positive impact on the economy, environment and society towards achieving net-zero carbon.
Dr Alalea Kia, UKRI Future Leaders Fellow - Imperial College London
Alalea is an early career female infrastructure researcher, innovator and educator from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London. Her research covers durability of cement-based materials, flood mitigation and adaptation, sustainable drainage systems, permeable pavements and multi-scale experimental and numerical modelling methods. Alalea has been working on the development of sustainable permeable concrete technologies since 2015 and currently leads the Resilient Sustainable Infrastructure Group at Imperial College London. To date she has produced more than 18 publications, including a book chapter and a patent. In August 2022, Alalea started a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship to develop the first sustainably heated permeable concrete pavement to keep infrastructure surfaces clear from ice/snow.
