Cycling@Lunchtime - Developing a cycling borough

Date: Wednesday 3rd December 2014
Time: 12:45 prompt (doors open from 12 Noon)
Speaker: Ben Kennedy, Principal Transport Planner, Hackney Council
Venue: UCL, Room 118, Chandler House, 2 Wakefield Street, London, WC1N 1PF

Developing a cycling borough
What's going on in Hackney, the London borough where cycling levels have doubled?

When it comes to cycle to work modal share, Hackney is starting to nip at the heels of Oxford and Cambridge. How has that come about?

Hackney is reputed to minimise the amount of dedicated cycing infrastructure in the borough, instead giving priority to ‘filtered permeability’ and other lower
cost policies. Was this out of necessity or by design?

This session will detail the key milestones along the way to Hackney's current cycling achievements. It will evaluate the extent to which demographic and
cultural changes in the borough have influenced the switch to bike travel.

The role of the transport planner in the transformation process will be examined critically. This will also be an opportunity to compare and contrast:
will the the new ‘segregation max’ approach that is sweeping through the cycle-planning profession influence Hackney’s approach?
