Led by the CIHT Dubai Group and the Middle East Clean Energy Business Council. This event will include speakers from CIHT, the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), the Clean Energy Business Council and more. This seminar on Transport Net Zero will follow the conclusion of COP26 to consider the challenges of climate change, discuss the interventions which will really make a difference and to consider appropriate transport policies and actions for Dubai, the UAE and other further afield.
For those joining from the UAE, this webinar will start at 18:00 GST
Action in the coming decade to 2030 will be critical to ensuring that the World is still able to limit the extent of climate change.
Many countries have made commitments to reducing their greenhouse gas emissions in order to meet the 2015 Paris Agreement objective of limiting global average temperature rise to 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels by 2050. Rapid and decisive action is needed to avoid the worst of the potential ecological, social and economic consequences which have begun to become apparent around the World.
It is hoped that the next United Nations Climate Change Conference – COP26 – in Glasgow between 31st October and 12th November 2021 will galvanise commitments and calls to action to tackle the most pressing challenge of our generation.
The transport sector has a central role in the decarbonisation challenge. In many countries, transport sector operations account for over a quarter of national greenhouse gas emissions, generally more than is generated by other sectors. To date, the adoption of Electric Vehicles is only just commencing and progress in decarbonising vehicle operation has generally been offset by growth in travel demand and in average vehicle size. The aviation and maritime sectors have also not yet been included in the Paris Agreement. This limited progress to date, and the scale of the transport challenge, means that we must plan to reduce greenhouse emissions as much as possible, and ideally to eliminate them entirely.
The potential for emission removals processes (such as carbon capture) to balance continued emissions to achieve Net Zero is likely to be limited. Transport decarbonisation will be driven by innovation and technological change to deliver zero carbon vehicles across all modes, as well as behavioural change to alter the extent and manner in which we travel and move freight. The transport profession will need skills and competencies to be “carbon literate” to meet the infrastructure and operational requirements ahead.
The CIHT Dubai Group is collaborating with the Middle East Clean Energy Business Council in holding this interactive Seminar on Transport Net Zero following the conclusion of COP 26 to consider the challenges of climate change, discuss the interventions which will really make a difference and to consider appropriate transport policies and actions for Dubai, the UAE and other further afield.
The Seminar will consist of brief opening presentations and statements from a number of experts, followed by a moderated and interactive panel discussion.
