Design Skills Symposium Scotland 2010

Delivering better places for Scotland to address climate change

West Park,
319 Perth Road Dundee

Climate change is one of the most significant challenges of our time. Scotland has set out ambitious targets to meet this challenge through the Climate Change Act. The planning reform agenda couples this aim with, ‘the creation of places where people want to be.’ Planning for places in a low carbon future is a key issue for planners, developers, designers and citizens. This event seeks to provide a hands-on opportunity using design skills to meet this challenge.

New Architecture and Design Scotland (A+DS) Chief Executive Jim MacDonald today revealed that Klas Tham, the internationally renowned designer who led the design and delivery of Bo01 in Malmö, will address the Scottish Design Skills Symposium in September. The Symposium is a collaborative initiative between A+DS, Improvement Services, and the Scottish Centre for Regeneration and Architecture and Place Division of Scottish Government.

Mr MacDonald said:

“The neccessity of delivering better streets and buildings which meet the challenge of climate change affects every community in Scotland. Through his work on leading the design of Bo01 Klas Tham has shown a way to meet that challenge. Bo01 is an excellent example of sustainable development and its design emerged from the need for fresh thinking about how to regenerate a key area of the city of Malmö. We are delighted that Klas will be able to share the wealth of his experiences and demonstrate how places like Mamlo can inspire the delivery of better places in Scotland.

“The success of Malmö was about doing the simple things well. The central principle of Klas Tham’s design for Bo01 was that the urgent shift to addressing the need for long-term sustainability will only be possible when the sustainable route is regarded not only as the wisest option, but also as the most attractive one.”

The event is a collaboration between Architecture and Design Scotland, Scottish Centre for Regeneration, Improvement Service and Architecture and Place Division. It is aimed at everyone involved in the shaping and delivery of places in Scotland.
