Emma Down - Bike share in the West Midlands
In the last few years bike share schemes have launched all over the UK.
The West Midlands is in the process of launching its very own integrated bike share scheme. This session will go through the case for bike share in the West Midlands context, research done, procurement options and what the scheme will look like. It will also highlight the importance of local opportunities such as the Common Wealth Games and the City of Culture.
Chris Slade, CoMoUK - Landscape of UK bike share and what it is achieving?
Three years of UK evidence shows bike share is providing access to a bike to those who don’t have one, re-engaging those who haven’t cycled for years and achieving a modal shift.
Exploring the wave of venture capital, are schemes at the mercy of the commercial sector? New schemes have launched in Edinburgh, Derby, and of course West Midlands.
Ian Stott, ITP - Bike share feasibility study for the West Midlands
Only 1% of travel to work trips are undertaken by bike in the West Midlands. Transport for West Midlands’ Cycling Charter sets out the aim to increase cycling to work in the region to 5% by 2023 and 10% by 2033. This would represent a significant shift in how people currently get around the West Midlands.
This presentation will take you through the process undertaken to assess the feasibility of a bike share scheme which could be adopted across the whole of the West Midlands to help achieve these targets. The project looked into potential demand for cycle hire and suitable station locations, appraised different operating and technology options, and looked at costs and funding through sponsors.
