Driverless Cars

A Greater London Branch Event

Date: 23 April 2014

Time: 6.00 for 6.30 start

Venue: SKM Offices Thomas St

Subject: Driverless Cars

Presenters Dr Baxendale, John Siraut

Global car ownership has now reached one billion and is expected to continue to rise. For the first time in our history more than half the world’s population is now living in urban environments - and it is estimated that this will increase to two in three people by 2040. These trends present social, environmental and economic implications. If we are to be able to sustain these trends then what are some of the implications for the car? Could driverless cars be one of them? Today cars in showrooms and on the road already contain basic autonomous capability but how near are we to having driverless vehicles on our roads and what would the advantages be?

The introduction of autonomous vehicles may prompt the biggest catalyst for change in transport and city planning in decades. Autonomous vehicles have the potential to deliver a range of positive outcomes to our cities and the way we plan our land use, public transport systems, parking supply and infrastructure investments. Part of Jacobs ‘Transport in Cities’ series, this thought provoking presentation will look at the critical implications of this technology and next steps that city planners need to take to fully realise the opportunities it offers.

Bio:

Dr Baxendale joined MIRA Ltd. in 1991 and is now Head of Future Transport Technologies. He is responsible for MIRA’s research strategy and the management and development of the programme to deliver this. The key pillars of this programme are low carbon vehicle technologies, intelligent transport technologies and unmanned ground vehicle technologies.

John Siraut is an economist at Jacobs specialising in the wider economic and social impacts of transport. He has worked across all modes from advising on the socio-economic impacts of HS2 to that of the new London Gateway port, from the economic impact of traffic signals to the development impacts of trams. He is author of a forthcoming paper of the Transport in Cities series on city Governance and its impact on transport.
